The East Trinity community came together on the 26th of February for an early Clean Up Australia Day event, with an invitation from the Djunbunji Land and Sea Rangers to help tackle the litter and illegal dumping issue at Giangurra Beach.
There was a great turnout of East Trinity locals, school students from Yarrabah, and also visitors to the area who all wanted to help collect, sort and catalogue the debris found. The enthusiastic team collected 700kgs of debris, which is a big decrease from the 1.9 tonne collected previously by the rangers. This shows that regular clean-ups of the area can reduce the debris and litter load on beaches in the long term.
All of the items found during the clean-up have been added to the Australian Marine Debris Database, a national initiative that seeks to track marine debris to its source for the purpose of stopping the rubbish before it enters our ocean to begin with.
The rangers put on a BBQ to say thank you to everyone who came, and served all the great food with reusable plates and cutlery, all sourced from their new reusable events kit they had put together to reduce their use of disposable items.
