The October clean up between Spout Creek and Grassy Creek saw a hugh increase in both items collected and weight, in fact over double the amount of marine debris was found than the previous clean up.
Students battled cold and wintery weather to remove 588 pieces of debris along this 1.5km stretch of the Victorian coastline that has been adopted by St Bernard’s College – Santa Monica campus.
Recent high tides and storm surges have caused both erosion and deposited debris high up on the rocky ledges. The most common items found were remnants of broken down plastic bags, plastic wrapping and hard plastic items such as lids and a huge amount of polystyrene foam.
Thanks to the students for the update and we look forward to receiving further data into the summer!
