Santa Monica’s August Clean Up

30 volunteers from the Santa Monica Campus of St Bernard’s College in Victoria participated in their monitoring beach clean up on the 19th August, 2009.

The students spent 1.5hrs collecting debris from a kilometre section of beach in between Spout Creek and Grassy Creek. 240 items of debris were removed from the coastline, weighing 7.5kg.

The most common items were plastic bags and bag remnants, broken glass and plastic bottles.

Santa Monica will run monthly clean ups at local beaches, helping to identify debris “hotspots” in the area, as well as protecting local marine life from the threat of entanglement and ingestion of the rubbish.

We will keep this page updated with further data and pictures. Well done!
