32 science students from Mackay’s Mercy College grabbed bags and gloves to help clean up Town Beach in Mackay on Sunday 6th March, 2011 for Clean Up Australia Day!
More than 477 items were removed from just 1.5km of Town Beach filling 36 clean up bags. The most common items found by students were 65 lids and bottletops, 64 aluminium cans, 64 cigarette butts and 52 glass drink bottles. The types of debris found indicate more of a littering problem on the beach, than debris being washed up from oceanic currents, however 1 oil lube bottle was also found.
Thanks to everyone involved for a great event!
