Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Streets at Spectacle Island

The HNCMA Hawkesbury River Foreshore Clean-up Program headed onto the Hawkesbury River again this week for a clean up at Spectacle Island with the help of volunteers from Father Chris Riley’s Youth off the Street Program.

Over three hours the group removed close to 450kg of debris from the eastern and northern foreshores of the island. This is the second outing by this group from Redfern, and the young people were very positive in the task, and enjoyed the outing.

A large pile of broken glass was uncovered on the south eastern corner of Spectacle Island and 15 x 20kg bags were removed, with plenty still there to remove on the next visit. A car bumper was also found with two car batteries and on the northern foreshore six car tyres and six full bags of small litter was removed. Mattress material and fish netting also taken from the mangroves.

The group received a suprise visit from the Water Police, who were curious of the IRBs on the water and after the program was explained the officers were very supportive.

Number of bags of litter collected = 23 bags with an approximate weight of litter collected = 450 Kg

Thanks to all partners involved in the program!
