Students from the Western Cape College in Mapoon helped out the Mapoon Land & Sea Rangers on a beach clean up at the end of April 2013. From just 150m of Back Beach, a massive 2460 items of marine debris were collected weighing 49.5kg!
The most common items included 68 thongs, 911 broken bits of hard plastic, 382 bits of rope cut offs, 547 lids and bottletops, 51 plastic drink bottles, 54 toothbrushes, 35 cigarette lighters – and yes this was from 150m of beach!
Most of the debris has washed over from South East Asia including Indonesia, China and Thailand. Great work to the students and rangers for helping keep this part of Australia clean!
After the clean up students made this comic of their day out on the beach. Click on the read more link to see a bigger version!
