Moving forward through Covid-19

These are extraordinary times, and we’d like you to know that we are keeping on top of emerging news and guidelines regarding the evolving situation with Covid-19

(coronavirus). You are undoubtedly experiencing significant disruptions to your life and routine, and we can certainly say that this will be a challenging time for all.

More than 20 of our events through March and April have been cancelled, postponed, or closed to the public, including the Port Phillip Bay Nurdle Hunt in Victoria, and many of our ReefClean Monitoring Clean-ups in Queensland. Our school engagement activities are all on hold and for workshops and presentations, we’re making the shift to virtual platforms. Through this experience, we’re re-evaluating the way we hold clean-ups and collect data and will likely come up with different methods to continue our work under new parameters. These steps are essential and vital to protecting the health of our community.

Many of you have expressed disappointment that you will not be able to join a clean-up or other community event as planned. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group of supporters and volunteers, and for that, we are grateful. While we can’t invite you to join us on official clean-up events, the natural environment still needs our help. You can make a difference by downloading the AMDI app and holding your own mini clean-ups with family or as individuals. We have many resources available on our website to lead you through the process.
For those parents who have been positioned to keep their children home from school, we have an Education Kit, which is aligned with national curriculum guidelines, available for your use and download.

The problem of marine debris remains an important issue. We are continuing the work as safely as we can and look forward to the day when we’ll invite volunteers to join us again. We hope we can continue to stay connected with you via online platforms. This crisis is going to have a dramatic impact on all of us. We are a strong community; we are a resilient community, and we have the opportunity to support one another through the challenges that lie ahead. We wish you the best as you navigate this unknown territory and look forward to continuing our work, with you alongside us, in the near future.
