Beach Hand bins

Thanks for being a Litter Hero and getting involved in protecting the Great Barrier Reef!

What is the Beach Hand Bin?

Litter on beaches is entirely preventable and this is where your Litter Hero Hand Bin comes in. The Hand Bins are ready-made, flat-packed, and hand sized bins that encourage beachgoers to remove debris they see on the beach and make sure they take their own litter with them. They are made from sustainably sourced paper stock and are lightweight, easy to carry and install, durable, and handy. The Hand Bin is designed by Share the Word Design Studio and you can check out a similar campaign trial in the Mornington Peninsula here

What is the purpose of the Litter Hero Hand Bin campaign?

The purpose of the campaign is to educate beachgoers on the value of the marine environment and issues surrounding beach litter and inspire a positive behavioural change in an innovative and convenient way. We want to encourage beachgoers to remove debris they see on the beach and make sure they take their own litter with them. Litter audits will be conducted before, during and after the trial to monitor the impact of the Litter Hero Hand Bin over time at designated sites.

How do you use the Hand Bin?

  • Designed to be pushed open into soft sand, the hand bin comes flat-packed and can be opened and inserted into dry sand easily.
  • It is coned-shaped and has a small opening at the bottom to guide the hand bin into the sand. Once positioned up right into the sand, it is ready to use.
  • Put small litter items into the hand bin whilst at the beach, instead of them being lost in the sand and eventually ending up in the ocean.
  • If it is windy, grab a handful of sand and push the litter inside to stop it from blowing away.
  • Before leaving the beach, pull up the hand bin and shake out the sand, holding your hand at the base to catch any smaller items that may fall through.
  • Simply, empty the contents into the nearest public bin and store the hand bin away for your next beach visit.
