Uncle Archie, the Aboriginal Community Education Officer and Ngarrindjeri Traditional Owner and Kellie O’Connell, Aboriginal Education Teacher were joined by the Nunga students from Goolwa Primary School on a blustery winter day at the end of August for a beach clean up and marine debris lesson at Goolwa Beach.
The enthusiasm from the students was obvious as they scurried around the beach and dunes bringing back debris and also treasures, including a boogy board!
The students collected 220 bits of debris weighing 10kg from 350m of beach. The top three items collected were 38 bits of broken hard plastic, 19 pieces of broken glass and 18 food wrappers.
Plastic resin pellets, the raw form of plastic used in manufacting, were also found and a sample was sent to the International Pellet Watch in Japan for analysis.
