What Kind of Dog Owner are you?
The team at Tangaroa Blue Foundation have set out to educate the public about the harmful environmental effects of dog waste and propose methods of green disposal in order to further reduce the environmental impact associated with pet ownership.
In an attempt to make the conversation of dog poop a little more fun, an interactive personality quiz based on association was drafted to determine “What Kind of Dog Owner Are you?”
The personality types for the quiz were based according to a scientifically credited psychology paper, which states there are 5 types of dog owners in regards to how they approach the situation of their dogs waste (Lowe, CN et al., 2014). A graphic design company, 55 Knots, generously donated their time to create caricatures depicting each of the 5 types of personalities based on the following descriptions. The team at Tangaroa Blue Foundation would like to thank the team at 55 knots for their generosity and excellent work.
Find out what type of dog owner you are by taking this short quiz:
1. Proud to pick up
This type of dog owner typically has a carry bag attached to their leash (because they are stylish) and is happy to really get in there and pick up their dogs’ poop. They can often be seen carrying the full dog poop bag around with them and will dispose of it in the bin or will even take it home with them if none are available.
2. It is the right thing to do
This type of dog owner isn’t overly happy about having to handle their dogs’ waste, but will do so (more so in a social setting) because it is the right thing to do for the environment and they don’t want anybody stepping on their dogs’ waste. They will often have some sort of bag with them (either attached to the leash or folded in their pocket) for those just in case moments. They will pick up their dogs’ waste but seek for the closest bin regardless of whether it is on the way of their walking path. It is likely that this is the category that most dog owners would fall in, so the personality would depict your ‘everyday dog owner’.
3. I have done my job
This type of dog owner also isn’t overly happy about having to handle their dogs’ waste, but will do so (more so in a social setting) because they don’t want anybody stepping on their dogs’ waste. They most definitely aren’t the environmentalist type in the sense that if there are no bins around they will just leave their bag full of poop off the sidewalk or at the bottom of a full bin, because they “have done their job”. They might have some sort of bags on them, but usually would be folded in their pocket hidden away, or they would rely on council provided waste bags to be available.
4. Only if I have to
This type of dog owner once again isn’t overly happy about having to handle their dogs’ waste and will only do so in a social setting when other people are present. They might have some sort of bags on them, but if so would definitely be hidden and they are only ever used for when there are glaring eyes present. More often than not they would pretend to go to pick up their dogs’ poo and hope that those around disappear before they actually have to, or if they do pick the poop up will dispose of it as soon as those people are out of the picture (most likely not in a bin unless it was conveniently on the way).
This type of dog owner never has and never will pick up their dog poop. They are the kind of owner who pays the next door neighbours’ kids to come and poop scoop their yard, or even worse, takes their dog for a morning walk next door just so their dog can go to the toilet. Even under social situations they would look people dead in the eye as they walk away from their dogs’ waste directly left in the middle of a walkway.
