Cocos Keeling Islands (CKI) are situated 2,750 kms northwest of Perth, Western Australia snd are a group of coral islands that form two atolls. Only two of the 27 islands are inhabited - the rest are waiting for you to explore them!
Tangaroa Blue Foundation is joining up with Keep Australia Beautiful Council WA, Two Hands Project, Sea Shepherd and researcher Dr Jennifer Lavers for the inaugural 2017 Cocos Island Beach Clean-up between March 18 - 25, 2017.
We are aiming to attract approximately 20 volunteers to the islands to pick up, count and record the debris, the majority of which is washing in from offshore sources.
The schedule looks like this - but will be updated as we get closer to the event.
Saturday 18 March: Arrive on Island, orientation and settle in, afternoon clean-up and welcome dinner
Sunday 19 March: West Island clean-up and audit
Monday 20 March: West Island clean-up and audit
Tuesday 21 March: Rest day with a Cocos Canoe tour to South Island
Wednesday 22 March: Home Island clean-up and audit and dinner at Home Island
Thursday 23 March: Direction Island clean-up & snorkel, bring bags of debris back to West Island for counting
Friday 24 March: Wrap up any remaining data and afternoon for relaxing or island tours
Saturday 25 March. Choose to stay on CKI, travel home or on to Christmas Island (CI) to discover more of the Indian Ocean Territories.
The dates for the clean-up are Saturday 18th to Saturday 28th March, 2017. If you wish to stick to the schedule, you will need to book your flights from Perth on Saturday 18th March to Cocos Keeling and then on Saturday 25th March to Perth via Christmas Island. You may wish to spend a few nights on Christmas Island on either end of your trip.
This is a self-funded volunteer experience. Average airfares from Perth are $1200-$1500, but seats are limited so you'll need to book early. See the costs of accomodation here. Spending money will be required for breakfast and dinners and additional tours. Lunches are provided.
